During her time volunteering at BiG Heroes, Girl Scout Victoria Robledo, was inspired to contribute in a meaningful way. She envisioned and initiated the development of a garden project aimed at equipping BiG Heroes members with essential skills in tending and cultivation. The garden's produce will not only provide fresh ingredients but also serve as a foundation for culinary education in the center’s kitchen.
Victoria’s project involves the construction of garden boxes and comprehensive training for BiG Heroes members on sustainability, nutrition, and the myriad benefits of gardening. Collaborating with board members and fellow students, she is dedicated to raising awareness and promoting this initiative.
Thanks to Victoria's efforts, BiG Heroes has secured a grant from Las Huellas Preservation, which will support the expansion of educational opportunities and ensure the success of this innovative project.
Operation BiG Heroes is a cadet program that was created by the Brownsville Border Patrol Station Border Community Liaison Team in collaboration with the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office of Luis V. Saenz and the City of Brownsville Police Department. Operation BiG Heroes is an educational outreach initiative that was created by the agencies to provide our community of young adults with disabilities an insight of law enforcement’s duties and responsibilities on a State and Federal level.
The project consisted of presentations and demonstrations of Border Patrol and the City of Brownsville equipment such as ATVs, boats, K9 and weapons that are used daily by Agents and Police Officers to fulfill their duties. Cadets also learned about the State criminal justice system and its process. Along with duties of all involved such as Judges, Prosecutors, Defense Attorney’s, Investigators and Bailiffs.
All agencies involved are very pleased and proud to report that our second mission has been a successful one as more members have joined the team of cadets this time around. We will continue to support the mission and vision of BiG Heroes which is to provide educational opportunities to these young adults with disabilities so that they too can be validated as productive citizens of our community as they learn and grow with more knowledge of what our beautiful community is about.
